We have a lot of customers come to us asking for a custom wood sign. Wood has such a classic feel to it. Wood type and grain makes every sign personal. A sign is a pretty powerful thing. It represents a lot about who we are. And handsome, well-crafted signs add beauty to the world – something we are whole-heartedly behind.
It can seem daunting to try to decide how to bring your vision to life. But never fear – we make it easy!
How We Work Creating Your Vision
It’s really important to us that you get exactly what you are looking for. From the minute you contact us, we take the time to understand what’s most important to you. From design to image to final look it is important to us that we create your perfect custom wood sign.
Let’s walk through how it worked for one of our clients.
Picking a Base for the Custom Wood Sign
We have quite a few photos on our site of ready-made signs. See all our ready made art here. One of our clients wanted a sign for the front of their RV to welcome people to their home-on-wheels. The clients liked the shape of this one but wanted to remove the flowers and butterflies. You can also see our gallery of custom work here.
It originally was 15” x 6” x 1” but they wanted something bigger that made a statement outside. I scaled up the slab to 36” long and 18” wide.
The First Steps to a Custom Wood Sign
Choosing the right type of wood for your project is something we can help with. Our customers chose cedar. The benefits of cedar wood is that it doesn’t shrink, swell or warp to the extent of comparable lumber, even under severe changes in humidity or temperature.
Cedar and pine are commonly used for many building projects. They both are prized by woodworkers for different reasons.
Once the customer decided on wood type we began carving the cedar slab to create the outline of our wood sign.
And then we begin the rough in process for the custom wood sign creating the edging and lettering.
Finishing Up Your Design
Once we finish the carve we start on the sanding to smooth out imperfections. The sanding also creates detail. Leave your sign unpainted for a uniform look or add color for a vibrant effect.
Our clients wanted their wood sign to have blue lettering but you can do any color. Or you can leave it natural. First, we painted the carved letters with paint. We also stained the edges of the sign to minic bark.
In one of the final stages, the blue lettering paint was sanded off leaving the carved lettering a lovely blue. Our clients included the Al Anon and AA symbols on their sign to personalize it.
Happy Clients Are Our Specialty
With their sign finished now it is ready to be sent to it’s happy owners. Finished with a clear coat for weather resilience, you can keep this sign outside in the elements for everyone to see – like our clients did – or display it proudly indoors as a welcoming addition to your office or business.
And here is their sign hanging in its place of honor. Pretty nice, huh?
Why We Love What We Do
This is why we love what we do so much — we love being able to create something our customers love and are proud to display. We love to be a part of helping our customers create something that they can stand back and look at and think, “This looks good. This is amazing.”
